Check if a number is on WhatsApp

Enter any phone number, get a click-to-chat link, and find out whether there is a WhatsApp account behind it.

At a glance

To check whether a phone number is on WhatsApp, open https://wa.me/ followed by the number in full international format with no plus sign, spaces or dashes. If WhatsApp opens a conversation, the number is registered. If it shows an invalid-number message, it is not.

How do I check if a number is on WhatsApp?

Open a wa.me link containing the number and see whether WhatsApp opens a chat. That is the method WhatsApp itself supports, and it is what the tool above builds for you.

The tool adds the part people get wrong: it takes the number in whatever format you have it, works out the correct international form for the country you pick, and tells you before you click whether the number is even valid for that country.

  1. Pick the country. Choose the country the number belongs to. This sets the dialling code and tells the validator which lengths and prefixes are legal there.
  2. Type the number. Paste or type it in any format. Spaces, dashes and brackets are fine. A tick appears at the end of the field once the number is valid for the country you picked.
  3. Open the chat link. Select Check on WhatsApp. The wa.me link opens in a new tab.
  4. Read the result. If WhatsApp opens a conversation with that number, it is registered on WhatsApp. If you see a message saying the phone number is invalid or is not on WhatsApp, it is not.

What does this tool actually tell me?

That depends on which of two modes the site is running in, and it is worth being precise about the difference because most tools in this category are not.

In link-first mode, which is the current default, the tool validates the number's format against the rules for the country you selected and builds the correct wa.me link. It does not contact WhatsApp. The registration answer comes from WhatsApp itself when you open the link, not from this site.

When a live lookup is available, the tool queries WhatsApp directly and reports registered or not registered before you open anything. Either way the underlying answer is WhatsApp's, never ours.

A valid format is not the same as a registered account. A number can be perfectly well-formed and have no WhatsApp behind it. Link-first mode confirms the first; only opening the chat, or a live lookup, confirms the second.

Can I message someone on WhatsApp without saving their number?

Yes. A wa.me link opens a conversation directly, so the number never has to enter your contacts.

WhatsApp also has this built in now. Recent versions let you type a phone number into the new-chat search and message it without saving, which is usually quicker if you are already in the app. A link is the better option when you need to hand the chat to someone else, put it on a website, or open it from a desktop browser.

Is it safe to check a number this way?

Opening a wa.me link does not notify the other person and does not send anything. Nothing happens on their end unless you type a message and press send.

On this site the number you type is never stored in readable form. When a live lookup runs, the number is converted to a salted HMAC hash, and only that hash is used as a cache key for 24 hours so repeated checks of the same number do not hit WhatsApp again. The hash cannot be reversed to recover the number.

Why is there no bulk checking or API?

Because bulk checking is what turns a phone number into a mailing list, and that is the opposite of what this tool is for.

Checking thousands of numbers to find which ones have WhatsApp is how unsolicited-message campaigns get built. It also breaks WhatsApp's terms and is a reliable way to get an account banned. There is no upload, no CSV, no public API and no paid tier that unlocks one. Requests are rate limited per visitor and the site runs bot protection.

If you need to validate a large list legitimately, the supported route is the WhatsApp Business API, where delivery status on a message to an opted-in contact tells you whether the number is reachable.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a number is on WhatsApp?

Open https://wa.me/ followed by the phone number in full international format, with no plus sign, spaces or dashes. If WhatsApp opens a conversation with that number, it is registered on WhatsApp. If it reports that the number is invalid or not on WhatsApp, it is not.

Does the person know I checked their number?

No. Opening a chat link does not notify anyone and does not send a message. Nothing reaches the other person unless you type something and press send.

Can I message someone on WhatsApp without saving their number?

Yes. A wa.me click-to-chat link opens the conversation directly, so the number never has to be added to your contacts. Recent versions of WhatsApp can also do this natively by typing a number into the new-chat search.

Is this tool free, and do I need an account?

It is free and there is no sign-up, no app to install and no paid tier. The numbers you check are never stored in readable form.

Why does a valid number show as not on WhatsApp?

A number can be correctly formatted and still have no WhatsApp account behind it. Landlines, newly issued numbers, and numbers whose owner has deleted their account all fall into this category. The format check and the registration check are two different things.

Can I check a list of numbers at once?

No. There is no bulk mode, no file upload and no public API, and this is deliberate. Bulk checking is how unsolicited-message lists are built, it breaks WhatsApp's terms, and it is a common cause of account bans.

Is this an official WhatsApp service?

No. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to WhatsApp or Meta. It builds links using WhatsApp's publicly documented click-to-chat format. WhatsApp is a trademark of Meta Platforms, Inc.
